From Preston, one hundred and fifty men went forth as soldiers in the Civil War in response to patriotism and humanity, and they were honored in grateful memory as citizens who served in arms for the preservation of the Union. Charles and Lucius Brown erected this tribute in 1898 as a token of filial gratitude, affection for their early home, and devotion to the patriotic service of the friends and neighbors of their youth. It also marks the dwelling place of General Samuel Mott, an eminent citizen, upright magistrate, soldier of the Revolution, and friend of Washington. Men from the town of Preston who served in the World War from 1914 to 1918 were also honored, and in 1921 the citizens of Preston erected a further tribute to them.
