After many months of peace and calm, a succession of pistol shots disturbed the town on a Saturday night when Officer Plumley arrested Phillip Staiger for disorderly conduct. Staiger had gone into Springsteads Saloon drunk and abusive, and Plumley put him out after being called to intervene. Staiger was quiet for a while, then went away to look for a pistol and later threatened people on the street, even drawing his pistol on David Hall. Plumley searched for him and found him in the Headquarters Saloon, searched him, and found no weapon. When Staiger returned to the street and again became abusive, Plumley tried to arrest him, but Staiger presented a gun and ordered him to stop. Plumley fired one shot as a frightener and then three more to scare him, but when Staiger still refused to yield, Plumley fired to hit, and the bullet only furrowed Staiger’s neck without seriously injuring him. Plumley then closed in and handcuffed him. Staiger was charged with resisting an officer, and his examination began Tuesday before Justice I.P. Yaney, with District Attorney Forbes prosecuting and W.P. George handling the defense.
