Marvin Culver of Nowata, Oklahoma, unearthed a large canary yellow diamond near this location on March 12, 2006. Weighing 4.21 carats rough, the bright yellow, egg-shaped gem appeared in his washed gravel while he was wet sifting at the north washing pavilion after he and his family decided to visit the park following a television program about the Crater of Diamonds. An Oklahoma State Trooper, he named it the Okie Dokie Diamond in homage to his home state. Culver’s friendly, charismatic appearances with the diamond in news stories and television programs nationwide in 2006 significantly affected park visitation and Arkansas tourism for many years.
