Mule-drawn Sorghum Mill
Industry
1
Sorghum syrup is made from the juice of sorghum cane and became prominent in the United States during the 1850s as an important source of sweetener. Many people planted just enough for their own use, while others grew it as a cash crop. This No. 2 Sorghum Mill, made by C.S. Bell & Company in the late 1800s, was powered by a mule hitched to a long pole that walked around the mill as it squeezed juice from the sorghum cane.
