For more than a century, this view has inspired people looking out over Ellison Bay nestled into the wooded bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment, the waters of Green Bay, and Washington Island in the distance. A Door County resident returning after years away recalled that no matter how much changed, the sight remained the same and signaled home. Saved for all to enjoy through the efforts of the Door County Land Trust, the Town of Liberty Grove, and many friends and partners who valued Door County’s natural treasures, it had long been a community treasure even while privately owned and cared for by the Hanson and Olson families since the 1900s. The park became the first project funded on the Door County Coastal Byway in March 2012, and for many years Russell and Virginia Hanson grazed horses and ponies here, helping maintain the open view of Ellison Bay.
