Established in April 1859 as an Overland Stage station, Burnt Station was later used by the Pony Express on the route between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. It was burned and pillaged twice by Indians, who killed five keepers and riders and two soldiers. The station was rebuilt on this site in May 1861 and on the ridge south of Overland Canyon in 1864.
