Work on the railroad was rarely romantic or glamorous; it was usually hard, grimy, noisy, greasy, and sometimes dangerous. At this site, mechanics still repair and maintain steam locomotives and rolling stock with tools and methods little changed since the 1930s. The historic Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad yard retains its industrial working character and presents a realistic portrayal of steam-era railroading while also telling the broader story of people whose lives were irrevocably changed by the railroad and the industry that drove the economic growth of the United States during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dramatically transforming the American landscape.
