Steam locomotives have vanished as a common sight in the American landscape, but at Steamtown the old yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad have come back to life as the National Park Service preserves America's heritage of steam railroading. From a distance, steam railroading retains its storied romance, yet up close keeping the trains running is a grimy, noisy, and potentially dangerous job. Steamtown National Historic Site offers a chance to experience both the grandeur and the grit of the main-line steam railroad, with access to a theater, a history museum, a technology museum, and the operating roundhouse, while National Park Service specialists and volunteers work to restore the site's large collection of steam-era rolling stock for display and operations.
