On May 26, 1871, four young pioneers from eastern Iowa, traveling in a prairie schooner, found the government survey marker at this corner and, using a compass and a rag tied around their wagon wheel, located other section corners on the unbroken prairie and then their homesteads: Rolland H. Cook on the northwest quarter of Section 2, Carroll Township; Augustus Herrick on the northeast quarter of Section 12, Carroll Township; Chas. W. Toothaker on the northwest quarter of Section 12, Carroll Township; and James McFarland on the northwest quarter of Section 32, Floyd Township.
