Thomas Hennington Owen, grandson of Methodist minister David Owen and Lucy McCraw, moved into the two-room rear wing with his bride Malissa Rose Sadler in 1833. His second wife was Mary Elizabeth Tarrant. The two-story addition built in 1838 was originally in the dog-trot style and was later enclosed. The house was built of hand-hewn logs and pit-sawed lumber from the plantation's more than 1,000 acres. In 1865, Union General James Wilson raided the plantation.
