Mission San Antonio de Pala, located 23 miles east of San Luis Rey de Francia, was founded in 1810 as an assistant mission. Its church was dedicated June 13, 1816 by Fray Antonio Peyri. An earthquake damaged it in 1899, and it was restored in 1903, when archetypal paintings were whitewashed. It was later restored authentically, including replication of original murals painted by Indian artist Antonio Lugo. This tiny mission still serves, beside the Cupeños, the Luiseño band of Palatinguas, the Indians for whom it was built. Its campanario is the only freestanding one of its kind in the Alta California mission chain, drawing inspiration from an older belltower at Juarez, Mexico.
