Topock Maze, south of Interstate 40 near Needles, California, is an archaeological site formed by many rows and groups of parallel ground lines. Long called a geoglyph, it remains important because its age, purpose, and makers are still contested. Edward M. Curtis gave it its modern name in 1908, proposing it was a maze or labyrinth, but later researchers rejected that idea. One interpretation holds that the lines are prehistoric and ceremonial for the Mojave people, while another argues the visible lines were made in the 1880s during railroad construction over an older prehistoric art site. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 5, 1978.
