Built in 1968, the Old Red Gondola at Gore Mountain operated from January 1969 to April 1999 as the only gondola in New York State. Over more than 30 years, it created fond memories, was the setting for numerous marriage proposals, and provided thousands of ski days while showcasing Adirondack views spanning over 100 miles. The gondola was 11,118 feet long, rose 2,100 vertical feet, used 110 four-passenger cabins, and was suspended by 24 towers ranging from 40 to 120 feet tall. It traveled 680 feet per minute, transported 800 people per hour, and took 34 minutes for a round trip. After its retirement, visitors to Gore Mountain could ride the Northwoods Gondola on Bear Mountain, one of Gore’s three peaks.
