Gore Mountain, near North Creek in the Adirondacks, is the highest point in Warren County and is notable for uniting recreation, surveying history, fire observation, and industry on one summit. Its name comes from an unsurveyed leftover tract of land, considered too steep and high for farming and unsuitable for horse-drawn logging during early settlement. A fire lookout was established there in 1909, later rebuilt after a 1919 hurricane, and remained in use until 1989; the tower still stands as a communications site. Beginning in 1878, garnet mining made the mountain an important industrial site, famed for exceptionally large garnet crystals.
