The lower section of the Susquehanna River Water Trail from York Haven to Safe Harbor follows a broad stretch of an American river shaped by the places and people of Pennsylvania’s heartland. Part of the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Susquehanna River Greenway networks, this corridor combines land- and water-based recreation with open space and scenic byways across the Chesapeake watershed. Along this reach are forested upper areas, renowned agricultural lands in the Lancaster-York Heritage Region, wide shallow sections of river, historic river towns, and large reservoirs created by four hydroelectric dams at York Haven, Safe Harbor, Holtwood, and Conowingo in Maryland. Notable destinations include the Old Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge, Chickies Rock, and Conejohela Flats, an internationally renowned bird habitat, while towns such as Columbia, Wrightsville, and Marietta promote their commerce, heritage, and recreation opportunities.
