Granlibakken, about a mile southwest of Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s northwest shore, developed from an early winter sports site into a year-round lodge and conference center. In the 1920s, locals used the snowy valley for ski jumping, and around 1928 D. L. Bliss added a double toboggan slide for Tahoe Tavern guests at Olympic Hill. Norwegian jumper Lars Haugen helped shape a jump there during an unsuccessful effort to attract 1932 Winter Olympic events, but national competitions were still held on the hill. After World War II, Kjell "Rusty" Rustad created the Tahoe Basin’s first ski lift and established Granlibakken, now recognized as the area’s oldest ski resort.
