Established in 1858 a quarter mile east of here, Union Methodist Church held summer camp meetings before the congregation moved to a site near Peniel in 1894. The arbor and church building remained at the original site, where they were convenient for the annual encampment of county Confederate veterans. About 1920, the church moved to its present location on U.S. Highway 43, and the original buildings were sold in the early twenties, with the proceeds used for a new fence around the cemetery.
