The Madison Branch of Wilderness Road was the last eighteenth-century link from Cumberland Gap to central Kentucky. By legislative act of March 1, 1797, Joseph Crockett built a new road from Milford, then the seat of Madison County, to intersect with the improved Wilderness Road at present-day Pittsburg. This point became the new forks of the road and replaced the Old Hazel Patch crossing.
