Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park in Missouri's Ozarks is known for a striking stretch of the East Fork Black River, where hard ancient rock narrows the channel into chutes, pools, and cascades that create a distinctive swimming area when conditions are safe. Its rugged terrain reflects very old igneous geology shaped by water erosion. The area was first used by the Osage Nation for hunting, then became the Johnston family homestead before Joseph Desloge assembled and donated much of the land to the state in 1955. A devastating reservoir failure in 2005 flooded and damaged the park, which later reopened with restored facilities, trails, and expanded protected wilderness.
