Nearby stand several notable historic buildings in Pocatello. To the northwest, across Center Street, the Carlson or Spaulding Building was built in 1919 in a Sullivanesque style, though remodeling of the first-floor storefronts and removal of the original tin cornice have altered its appearance. The Pocatello High School Gym and Auditorium were added in 1938-39 as a Depression-era WPA project, and architect Frank Paradice, most responsible for designing Pocatello’s downtown buildings, chose gold-brown brick with Art Deco terra cotta ornamentation to cover the original sandstone structure. To the northeast, the Valentine Building, a Frank Paradice design from 1916 in Neo-Classical Revival style, is distinguished by its white glazed terra cotta exterior. To the east, the Federal Building, dating to 1916 in classic Federal style, housed the Post Office, District Court, Forest Service, Weather Bureau, and other federal offices. To the south, next to the Square, the North Building was built in 1916 by Pocatello clothier George North; it was constructed of cream-colored brick and has an attractive tin cornice. To the west, one block over, the Carnegie Library was built in 1907 with a $12,000 grant from steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and is an outstanding example of Palladian Villa Architecture.
