In the early 1920's, South Main Street, also known as Niles Rd., was still unpaved, and automobiles shared the road with horse and buggy. A family rode down the street at that time. The Levy Building, built in the early 1920's, was by about 1928 home to the L.R. Wells Insurance Agency and the Clawson Post Office, reflecting the common practice of locating the Post Office in the business of whoever served as Postmaster. Police and Fire Chief Leste Straub patrolled the village on his motorcycle, and by 1959 Greg's Dairy Bar occupied a newer building adjacent to the Levy Building.
