John C. Calhoun Memorial Highway honors John Caldwell Calhoun, 1782-1850, regarded as the Old South's most admired statesman, a profound philosopher, and America's most influential spokesman for state's rights. From 1808 to 1810 he served South Carolina in the S.C. House of Representatives. Between 1811 and 1850 he served in the federal government as a congressman, secretary of war, twice as vice-president, secretary of state, and senator. Calhoun was considered a brilliant parliamentarian, an able administrator, and a patriotic American. In 1957, the U.S. Senate voted him one of America's five outstanding senators of the past. His home, Fort Hill, is on the nearby Clemson University campus in Pickens County, and he is buried in St. Philip's Churchyard in Charleston, S.C.
