Spanish Oak Mountain is a 4,531-foot peak in North Carolina’s High Country, southwest of Newland, notable for standing on the Eastern Continental Divide. Because of that position, water from its slopes drains in different directions: most feeder streams flow toward the North Toe River, while White Pine Creek on the southeastern side runs to the Linville River. The mountain was named for the Spanish oak, a type of red oak found there. Today, much of the mountain is covered by Fraser fir farms, tying it to the High Country’s longstanding Christmas tree-growing tradition.
