Horseshoe Canyon, a remote canyon in eastern Utah, is renowned for its exceptional concentration of Barrier Canyon Style rock art, including the Great Gallery, one of the largest and best preserved groups of these figures. Formerly called Barrier Canyon, it is the place where this art style was first recognized, and the Great Gallery section was added to Canyonlands National Park in 1971 for protection. Human use of the canyon stretches from Paleo-Indians about 9000 to 7000 B.C. through Desert Archaic peoples, Fremont communities, and Ancestral Puebloans, with Native American use believed to have ended by about 1300 A.D.
