Aztec Butte rises above the mesa, overlooking sheer cliffs and twisted canyons in every direction. Hundreds of years ago, ancestral Puebloans survived here through hard work and ingenuity, climbing the buttes in yucca sandals and carrying baskets of seed and grain to store their harvest in small stone structures sealed with mud. These granaries still stand today as evidence of the skill of the people who made this area their home.
