Christopher Harrison was Indiana's first Lieutenant Governor and was also a pioneer merchant, attorney, judge, horticulturist, member of the territorial legislature, and commissioner to lay out the state capital city. The site was the location of his home and garden, and his modest residence was the first brick building in Salem.
