Sussex County Courthouse was begun in 1825 and completed in 1828. It was built by Dabney Cosby, a master brickmason who had worked under Thomas Jefferson in the construction of the University of Virginia. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973, and its exterior was restored by the Board of Supervisors and the Independence Bicentennial Commission of Sussex County in 1975.
