Fresno Flats, now Oakhurst, formed the western end of the Old French Trail, also called the Fresno Flats Trail. Built by J. S. French, the 54-mile trail was a vital east-west route for supplies, mail, equipment, and pioneers through the Sierra Mountains. It linked Fresno Flats with the mining camps of Mammoth City, Mill City, Mineral Park, and Pine City. The one-way fare was 15 dollars per person, and 20 pounds of free weight was followed by a charge of 8 cents per pound. After the mines failed in the 1880s, ranchers, sheep herders, prospectors, and the U S Forest Svs used the trail as the route from Fresno Flats to Mammoth until the 1930s. Although only remnants remain, the Old French Trail had a major impact on the growth of Madera and Mono Counties.
