The McCollum-Murray House, built about 1906 with Classical Revival architectural influences for Edward J. McCollum, an African-American businessman and machinist with the Mallard Lumber Company, became the home of Charles E. Murray after McCollum and his wife Margaret took him in following the death of his father William in 1922, when Murray was twelve years old. They considered him their foster son and encouraged him to pursue his education. Murray, a prominent African-American educator and graduate of what is now S.C. State University, lived here from 1922 until his death. He taught at Tomlinson High in Kingstree from 1929 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1960, and he served as principal of the Williamsburg County Training School, later named C.E. Murray Elementary and High School after 1972, from 1960 to 1983.
