The people of Shrewsbury honor the memory of the eight Shrewsbury men who died in service and commemorate the service of each resident, one hundred sixteen men and two women, who served in the First World War, the "Great War." Those who died in service were Howard Walter Beal, Herbert Bradford Hapgood, Michael Joseph Nee, James Schouler, James Eagan Conlon, Joseph Hickey, Raymond Stone, and Byron Edwin Stone. The memorial was rededicated on November 11, 2013, and bears the words, "For Those Who Sacrificed Their Lives For Freedom."
