The “Hay Tree,” a camphor tree in Paramount, was an informal gathering place for workers, farmers, and hay sellers and a familiar setting for lunches, card games, and catered meals after Trev. Moore’s cattle auctions. One of the biggest hay suppliers to the Southern California dairy industry, Western Consumers Feed Company, had its headquarters in the still-standing building south of the tree, while to the north stood the Trev. Moore Sales and Service Co., for decades the largest dairy broker in California. Every morning, representatives from the city’s many hay lots gathered under the tree to compare notes and decide the day’s composite price for hay, which Western Consumers then forwarded to brokers in Chicago and New York City to help set prices for hay sellers around the world.
