During the Civil War, twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned, with nineteen of them destroyed in the last fifteen months; twelve were burned by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, and two by Union accident. The courthouse at Marion was burned by guerrillas in January 1865, leaving the building a total loss though its walls stood, and county records were lost. The courthouse burned again in 1870.
