Sheep Mountain
Nature
Sheep Mountain is a 10,608-foot summit in the Beartooth Mountains of southern Montana, about 3.75 miles north of Cooke City, within Custer-Gallatin National Forest and the New World Mining District. Part of the Rocky Mountains, it rises steeply above Fisher Creek, gaining about 1,650 feet in a mile. Its waters drain northwest to Goose Creek and elsewhere to Fisher Creek and Lady of the Lake Creek, which help form the headwaters of the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River. The mountain lies in a subarctic climate with long, very cold winters and mild summers, and the nearby country is well known for outstanding backcountry snowmobiling.
