During General Nathanael Greene's retreat from the British army under Lord Cornwallis, the American army crossed the Yadkin at Trading Ford, one-half mile southeast of this spot, on February 2-3, 1781. A sudden rise in the river prevented the British from crossing and allowed the American army to escape and prepare for the Battle of Guilford Court House.
