Soon after Hutchinson County was created in 1901, a county-wide public school district was established, and as settlement increased, regional districts followed. Common School District No. 8 was established in the county's northeastern corner in 1902. Its first schoolhouse, a one-room structure on land owned by Benjamin Calvin Holt, was built in 1903. The present two-room schoolhouse was constructed in 1916 with lumber and other building materials hauled from Texoma, Oklahoma. This simple wooden building shows classical revival detailing, especially at the gable entrance, and also features oversized windows and decorative wood shingles. Regular classes continued here until 1935, when students began attending school in Spearman. Afterward, the building remained a community gathering place for worship services, weddings, funerals, quilting bees, local theater productions, and elections. In 1949, the school buildings and grounds were deeded to the Holt Cemetery Association.
