Pipkin, also called Malpais Crater, is a cinder cone volcano in California's Rodman Mountains, rising about 300 feet and spanning about 2,000 feet. Lava flows extend north from the cone across a mesa-like field. Active during the Quaternary, it produced weathered flows dated to about 770,000 and roughly 600,000 years before present. The cone consists of lava bombs and red and black scoria, and its eruptions sent lava through Kane Wash into the Mojave River valley, possibly diverting part of Kane Wash into Sheep Springs Wash. Since the 1950s, Pipkin has also been quarried and mined for volcanic ash.
