Volcano House is a distinctive mid-century modern residence near Newberry Springs in the Mojave Desert, built in 1968–1969 atop an extinct volcanic cinder cone. Commissioned by engineer and inventor Vard Wallace and designed by Pasadena architect Harold James Bissner Jr., it was conceived as a highly personal desert retreat reflecting Wallace’s interests in astronomy and fishing. Its 16-sided circular form, domed roof, open interior, observation deck, and surrounding compound made it one of the region’s most recognizable works of residential architecture. Though still private and inaccessible to the public, it has remained notable for its dramatic setting, unusual design, and appearances in popular culture.
