Santee State Park occupies 2,500 acres in South Carolina’s Sandhills on the western edge of Lake Marion, one of the state’s largest lakes. Created in 1942 after Orangeburg County donated the land, it developed around the lake’s recreational importance. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, birding, hiking, camping, and especially fishing define the park, with Lake Marion known for largemouth bass as well as striped bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bream. The park also includes three short nature trails, a seven-mile biking route, two boat ramps, two campgrounds, and 30 rondette cabins, including 10 built on piers over the lake.
