Mount Hope's historic walking tour leads through downtown and the town's past, highlighting how the New River Company shaped both Mount Hope and the Southern West Virginia coalfields. Public art includes the A. Dubois On Main Museum mural honoring one of two historically black high schools in Fayette County, a Mount Hope Elementary School student mural representing the fire of 1910 and the community's renewal, and the Mount Hope Phoenix Wall, installed in 2018, depicting the people, places, events, and future possibilities of the town. Historic sites include the sealed portal of the former Siltix Mine, operated until 1984 and serving as a memorial to those killed in the July 23, 1966 explosion; Coal Heritage Park with its cut stone fountain and exposed Sewell coal seam; the 1920 commercial building being restored as the Coal Heritage Discovery Center; Aide's Department Store, open from the 1930s into the early 1990s; the 1897 Old Stone Bank, which survived the fire of 1910; Bon-Bon's Confectionery and Hardware, a longtime gathering place established in the 1920s; the Garrett and McNabb Block, reflecting Main Street commerce after the 1910 fire; the Princess Theater, opened in 1928 in the Neo-Classical Masonic Building; the Mount Hope Community Center, built in 1922 by the New River Company for the Loup Creek YMCA; the 1941 New River Company Store serving miners and their families; the 1940 Post Office designed by U.S. Treasury architect Louis A. Simon and featuring a Mining mural by Michael Lenson; the 1917 New River Company General Office Building; the Mountainair Hotel, built in 1910 by the New River Company for business visitors; Stadium Terrace, a 1939 public housing development designed by H. Rus Warne; and Mount Hope Municipal Stadium, designed in 1933 by George Siems and built through local fundraising and public works labor.
