Washington State Park in eastern Missouri preserves both prehistoric Native American petroglyphs and notable stonework from the Great Depression. Its carvings, cut into dolomite rock and dating from about 1000 to 1600 CE, include birds, arrows, footprints, turkey tracks, human figures, and geometric forms. The three petroglyph sites, likely remnants of a larger ceremonial complex linked to Middle Mississippi people related to Cahokia, contain more than 350 symbols and nearly 75 percent of Missouri’s known petroglyphs. In the 1930s, African-American stonemasons of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1743 built many of the park’s enduring shelters, pavilions, and trail stonework, later recognized as a historic district.
