Kyes Peak rises more than 7,280 feet in Washington’s Henry M. Jackson Wilderness and is the highest summit in the Monte Cristo group. Together with Columbia Peak and Monte Cristo Peak, it surrounds a basin containing Columbia Glacier and Blanca Lake. The mountain was earlier known as Goblin Peak and Mount Michigan. Its present name honors Commander James Ellsworth Kyes, who climbed it with Reginald Bachelder on August 15, 1920, though Thomas Gerdine of the USGS probably reached the summit earlier in 1897. Unusually for the Washington Cascades, it is named for a climber and was later officially renamed in recognition of Kyes’s wartime sacrifice.
