In 1972, Jack Phillips and his sister, Betty, bought Fred's dollar store and an adjoining restaurant from their brother Fred Phillips and opened Phillips Shoes. The store became a cornerstone business in downtown Monterey for 40 years. Jack operated the store until 2008, when he died. That same year, Frank and Jeannie Templeton purchased the store, and the local couple decided to sell the building in 2021.
