Mississippi College's oldest building, Provine Chapel, opened in 1860 and early in the Civil War was transformed into a hospital for the wounded troops of Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Originally known as the Chapel, its ground floor was believed to have served as a stable for his horses. For decades, the chapel was used for college classrooms and worship services, and it was the site of Clinton Baptist Church services until 1923. In 1968, the chapel was renamed to honor Mississippi College leader President John William Provine, a natural science professor who served as president from 1897-98 and 1911-32. The building marked its 150th anniversary with a series of concerts in 2009.
