John Hubbard Forsyth was born on August 10, 1797, and farmed this land with his father. After his wife, Deborah, died in 1828, he left his family in New York and traveled to Kentucky, where he joined a cavalry unit. Later he became a captain in the regular Texan cavalry. With Col. William Travis, he defended the Alamo alongside Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and nearly 200 volunteers. On March 6, 1836, after Travis and Bowie died, Capt. Forsyth led the forces until all were killed in the Battle of the Alamo.
