Founded in 1975 in West Henrietta south of Rochester, the New York Museum of Transportation grew from efforts to preserve Rochester’s lost street railway heritage after local streetcars and the Rochester Subway disappeared. Two surviving cars were brought into its former dairy barn in 1973, and volunteers later built a demonstration railway from salvaged materials, including track from the abandoned subway. Joined in 1993 to the neighboring Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum, the line gained overhead wire and power in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It now operates New York State’s only working electric trolley ride while volunteers continue restoring historic cars tied to Rochester and broader U.S. street railway history.
