Nez Perce Encampment
Military
About noon, the families made camp at ćáynim?a•lika?spe, Place of Manure Fire, where scouts killed several buffalo and some warriors watched from the buttes for enemies they did not expect. With thick grass for horses, fresh water in Snake Creek, and buffalo nearby, the exhausted Nez Perce, after three months and 1,170 miles, set up camp here and organized according to the five tribal bands. At this point they had outdistanced their original pursuers, but they did not realize that a larger military force was approaching fast from the east.
