The Waterpocket Fold, a massive geologic barrier, shaped the lives of people over time, and Capitol Gorge, carved by sediment-filled water, became one of the main gaps through the rugged Fold and a primary travel route for American Indian tribes, settlers, and ranchers. In 1883, a group led by Elijah C. Behunin spent eight days clearing boulders from a 3.5-mile stretch of canyon to improve wagon passage. What began as a rough frontier trail eventually became an important link connecting isolated parts of Utah divided by the Waterpocket Fold, though travel remained difficult, with motorists enduring long hours over rough, rocky conditions. In 1962, the last segment of Utah State Highway 24 was completed through the Fremont River canyon, bypassing Capitol Gorge, but floods still challenge travelers in this remote part of Utah. Nearly 100 miles long, the Waterpocket Fold was sculpted by water, and the rock barrier and the presence of water determine where plants, animals, and humans can exist. Although the area receives less than ten inches of precipitation each year, summertime monsoonal thunderstorms can turn quiet, narrow canyons into dangerous torrents because sparse plants and little soil allow water to run rapidly downstream. Sediment-filled flash floods carry boulders, shrubs, and debris, scour the land, deepen canyons, widen valleys, and continue reshaping the landscape through winter rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles. Life in these dry canyons survives only by adapting to extremes: north-facing cliffs are cooler and wetter, south-facing cliffs are hotter and drier, wash bottoms support quick-growing plants after floods, and waterpockets provide reliable water that draws mountain lions, bighorn sheep, insects, birds, and small mammals.
