Golden Throne
Nature
Golden Throne is a sandstone mountain in Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah, rising about 7,041 feet within the Waterpocket Fold, the nearly 100-mile monocline that shapes much of the park. Formed of Navajo Sandstone, it stands out because this rock, usually creamy white or red, is here stained a rich gold. That distinctive color comes from a small amount of the Carmel Formation resting atop the Navajo Sandstone, giving the dome its appearance and name. A trail about 2 miles long passes below it, and the mountain remains one of Capitol Reef’s most recognizable landmarks for its unusual geology and striking color.
