During the War of 1812, North Carolina Governor William Hawkins called up militia companies from Brunswick, Bladen, New Hanover, and Duplin counties for the state's coastal defense against British invasion at Fort Johnston in Southport. Many were encamped at Deep Water Point, where they faced severe shortages of shelter, clothing, and medicines. Construction of barracks was delayed by inclement weather and a lack of tools and materials.
