Sgt. Alvin C. York received the nation's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for actions near the French village of Chatel-Chehery on Oct 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive against German forces. He lived all his life in the Valley of the Three Forks of the Wolf River and was regarded here as America's greatest World War I hero.
